‘PAULA!’ Warwick forestalled anything Paula was going to say, letting go of Libby’s arm and holding out his hands. ‘I had no idea you were back. How was Madrid? How was the fashion show? Let me get you a drink. You look stunning in that dress.’ With ease born of practice, he steered the dark-haired girl through the crowd to the galley where bottles were lined up in rows. Libby had the feeling that she was already forgotten. She had seen how his eyes had lit up, the pleasure he was feeling because his fiancée had put in an unexpected appearance.

Ramón Martos appeared at Libby’s side as if by magic, his smile intended to act as a balm, but there was very little that would soothe the pain she was feeling. ‘I thought he’d kicked Paula out ages ago,’ he muttered, his dark eyes savage on the beautiful girl who had usurped Libby. ‘We all know what she’s like; she’s been hanging around him for years, and always causes trouble if he so much as looks at another girl. Come, let’s go up on the deck for some air. It’s suddenly very stifling in here.’

Libby did not need asking twice. It was obvious Ramón had no time for Paula. Was his opinion shared by any of the others? She risked a glance around the room, and felt comforted by the sympathetic smiles. They were unbelievably all on her side! Except that none of them knew Warwick and Paula were engaged! How long would it be before the beautiful girl spread the news?

Maria was also outside, and she grimaced compassionately. ‘I understood Paula was still in Madrid. Trust her to turn up and spoil the evening. I wonder who told her about the party?’

‘It hasn’t spoilt it for me,’ announced Libby firmly.

The older woman looked at her in disbelief. ‘We’re none of us fools, Libby. Warwick’s been showing you off all night as if you’re a prized possession. It’s just that Paula’s such an old friend he feels he cannot ignore her. A pity, a great pity, don’t you agree, Ramón?’

He inclined his head gravely. ‘Very much so.’

‘Warwick pretends to like me for other people’s benefit,’ protested Libby vehemently. ‘He really has very little time for me.’

‘Then why are you living with him?’ asked Ramón with a frown. ‘It is not the impression I was given.’

‘I came out to see my sister, but she’s—she’s moved without giving me her new address.’

‘I do not understand,’ said Ramon. ‘What has Warwick to do with your sister?’

‘Rebecca is Libby’s sister,’ Maria told him. ‘You remember Rebecca?’

Ramón’s eyes narrowed as a frown drew his brows together. ‘Rebecca is your sister?’ he repeated slowly. ‘I did not know. I think I now understand why Warwick…’ His voice tailed off as he realised he was being indiscreet. ‘I am sorry, truly sorry. It is a very difficult situation.’

Maria was looking from one to the other in bewilderment. ‘Would you mind telling me what you’re talking about?’
